Legionella Management
Comprehensive programs to identify, remediate and prevent Legionella growth
Comprehensive programs to identify, remediate and prevent Legionella growth
Legionella is a type of bacteria that grows in improperly managed cooling and domestic water
systems. When inhaled from aerosolized contaminated water, Legionella can lead to a type of pneumonia termed Legionnaire’s
Disease, which can be fatal. In particular, Legionella can be very dangerous to at-risk individuals with compromised immune
systems, smokers and elderly populations. As of June 2015, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and
Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) passed the 188-2015 Standard, which outlines the specific steps that a
facility must meet to minimize the risk of Legionella growth. At Water Dynamics, we are taking a pro-active approach to the prevention and
management of Legionella. We are leading the way through the top scientific methods and can help your facility design,
implement and manage a Legionella program.

Benefits:
-Identification and remediation of Legionella species, including dangerous pneumophila serogroup 1
-Prevention of slime formation, which facilitates Legionella growth
-Reduced risk to building and local occupant health
-Reduced liability due to Legionella infection
-Compliance with ASHRAE Standard 188-2015
-Compliance with NY State and local laws and regulations
-Development of a comprehensive Water Management Program
-Annual Cooling Tower Certification in compliance with NY State law
-Cooling Tower inspections by a Certified Water Technologist (CWT)

Basics:
Legionella Growth
Legionella is a gram-negative bacteria that is known to cause a pneumonia-like disease in humans known as Legionnaire's Disease.
Legionnaire's Disease typically affects elderly people (over 65), immune-compromised individuals and smokers. It is fatal in
roughly 10-15% of people who acquire the disease. In the summer of 2015, 12 people died in the South Bronx, NY due to Legionnaire's
Disease. As a result, NY State legislators passed regulations
requiring cooling tower owners to test, remediate and take steps toward
preventing Legionella growth.
Legionella Prevention
Cooling towers typically run at a temperature ideal for Legionella growth. In addition, slime mass due to
improperly managed cooling tower chemistry can facilitate Legionella growth. Despite this ideal environment,
Legionella can be effective managed by a properly executed biocide program. Water Dynamics has extensive experience in preventing
Legionella growth and can execute an effective biocide program at your facility.
Legionella Testing
Water Dynamics partners with the leading experts in the field of Legionella testing to provide fast and accurate results. Using the
"gold standard" culture testing, Water Dynamics can provide identification of Legionella species and quantification of the levels
of Legionella. Due to the methods used, which require growing bacteria on specialize bacterial culture plates, results are
typically available with 7-10 days after sampling.
Legionella Remediation
There are many ways to remediate a cooling tower that contains Legionella contamination. From disinfection with oxidizing
biocides to complete cooling tower cleaning, Water Dynamics can work with you to determine the best course of action for your operation.
